Ever had an ah-ha moment?
Standing at a train station waiting for your morning train, listening to an audiobook that stirs something inside you and suddenly you uncontrollably fist-pump the sky.
Serendipity striking at 5:04am and you jump up and fill 12 pages in a notebook in 45 minutes.
That one sentence, that seems to come to you in a thought or sometimes a vision; I-can’t-believe-no one-has-thought-of-that solution or insight for something you are stuck on at the moment.
I’ve had these sorts of moments at various times in my life, but surprisingly all of those above and more have happened in the last week!
So, why is this happening so often?
The sappy answer – “I’m letting it”
The technical answer – Game Changers.
Game Changers.
These quick reads are packed with resources and links to show you the who, what, where, and why that have completely rocked the foundations of achieving the ultimate Work, Life – Balance.
From personal experience to stories shared by friends and colleagues, these proven strategies, simple effective tactics, clever intuitive tools, and huge list of resources and people will touch every part of your daily life and I’m sharing them all in a series of short posts.
Here is the first one – Mentors.
Talk to any great sporting professional, entrepreneur, artist, or writer and they’ll rave that their mentor/s made the difference.
Our lives are moving and changing at such a rapid pace, no one mentor is usually all-encompassing to provide the insights for every stage of our careers, endeavours, and life.
The following are 3 mentors that have shifted the gears for me in the last few years.
If you are looking to start a venture, nab your dream job, live a healthier life, or achieve more balance across them all, these guys are a great platform to get you there.
Game Changers – The Top 3 “Mentors” for Kickstarting a Work, Life, Balance:
The journey started with Tim Ferriss. If you haven’t heard of him (what?!) I urge you to check out either The Next Web [24m] or if you can handle a weekend read The 4-Hour Workweek, it will change your life.
Spoiler alert: there are little side-notes throughout the book that challenge you do something that seems silly or even childish. Without giving away too much, the secret here is actually quite simple. By doing something new and different, something completely unconventional, you are motivating yourself to take action and exercising your creative mind to think outside the square.
Once you’ve opened your mind a little to at least listen to the unconventional, you may even be tempted to try something new out.
This is exactly what happened to me, I hadn’t even finished 4HWW and I was struck with a sudden surge of creative energy and an I-can-do-this motivation. The 4-Hour movement started for me with book 2, The 4-Hour Body. It helped me lose 20lbs of unhealthy weight in 10 weeks. This kickstarted a simple gym routine that had me grow my arms by an inch in 21 days. The list goes on, but suffice to say, all these things had seemed impossible to me for over 30 years until I challenged myself and discovered power of the unconventional.
For those of you waaaay ahead on this stuff (“Ferriss is old news man, give me more!!”) the next game changer came while trying to find more great live stuff from Ferriss. He is a great speaker. This lead me to someone I had heard about but had never thought to give the time of day to – Joe Rogan.
Wow. Loved the absolute rawness and effortless comedy. In an upcoming post, I’ll talk in a bit more detail about Rogan, my introduction to Nootropics and the famous “Alpha Brain”. The guests on the Joe Rogan Experience were enormously varied in their fields and I stumbled upon this gem and my next biggest influencer this year – Dave Asprey.
Being a “middle-management” guy myself, the Bulletproof Executive appealed to me instantly. Here was a guy with c-level clients, a popular website, heaving-forum, loads of videos, a podcast, a growing line of premium food products, stark-raving fans, a book (2 now), and best of all he seemed to be able to keep this all up and talk about how much time he spends with his kids. All I need to do is try a few of his hacks that will build on the 4-hour body stuff I already know and change up my caffeine habit? I’m in.

Last, but no-way least – the single biggest influencer this year in my business, personal outlook, motivation, learning, relationships, and everything to do with living a “rich life” came from an unlikely character who regularly refers to himself as my “Surrogate Asian Father” – Ramit Sethi.

Ramit immediately found a spot within my new learning-self under the guise of financial and career guru. He would hate me calling him a guru and it wasn’t long before I realised there was a lot more going on under the surface of his funny stories, interview tips, (eyebrows-of-awesomeness), and money-tactics. This guy was more than a guru, he was a fully-fledged Expert on Living A Rich Life.
